At the end of 2020, I realised I had only taken one weekend off work. It was a weird year, and I entered distraction and work mode. If I kept busy, there would be no room for worry.
The problem with that was that by the end of the year, I was exhausted, hated my work, hadn’t financially gained from the level of effort I put in, and was an emotional wreck.
I decided that Christmas, I was scheduling my downtime to take a week off every 8 weeks. Which I did, and I am grateful I created that boundary. Then, in 2022, I was unwell (hospitalised) with a Crohn’s flare, and now we think I also had long covid and endometriosis flare. I had to sign myself off work for a month (in hindsight, it should have been longer), and as I returned to work, I had to build my week up slowly. When building that week’s back up, I needed to make sure it worked for me and helped me manage my needs for looking after my health. And I haven’t looked back.
