Posture 101 Masterclass 

I have been speaking to/working with people struggling with their posture. They are collapsing into their bodies and it’s causing pain AND heightened anxiety!

Pain is presenting differently for each: some it’s neck, some in the upper back, some lower back, and some all of the above. They were also breathing into their upper chest, which is what drives that feeling of anxiety. To reduce anxious feelings we need to be breathing more deeply. Some people will describe it as belly breathing, some diaphragmatic breathing. Either way, it’s filling your lungs from the bottom like balloons. If you fill from the chest, the breath will get stuck there and your nervous system will be in its sympathetic state (fight, flight, alert, action). 

Your posture impacts your ability to breathe deeply. Weak lung and diaphragm muscles make it harder to hold good posture. Essentially they support each other. 

Simple things to do: 

– Move your body every day

– Practice diaphragm breathing  

– Stretch tight muscles and strengthen the weak ones (usually tight chest and weak back and core

– Have an awareness of your posture in your most common seating positions and of your breath habits.
