Do isometric exercises really lower blood pressure?

Hello,

Did you see in the news last week a report that isometric exercises lower blood pressure? I didn’t, because I don’t read or watch the news, but a couple of you reached out to ask…

So is it really true?

The short answer is yes, but there is a but after that…

Isn’t there always!!

You may (or may not) remember about 10 years ago there was a buzz about the 8 mins of exercise to improve your cardiovascular health (heart health)… And while it’s true you can do 8 mins of exercise to improve your health, you had to push yourself to a point of extreme discomfort, even when I was at my fittest I struggled to get to…

Is this the same?

Well, yeah, pretty much.

You have to hold the exercise (statically) for 2mins then repeat that 4 times without locking into your joints… (if you want to read the actual study, you can do here: https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2023/07/02/bjsports-2022-106503)

BUT….

Please don’t feel disheartened…

Any ‘safely executed’ exercise you do has a net positive on your overall health. No matter what your starting point is.

Building strength is ESSENTIAL for longevity.

You don’t have to go to the gym and lift weights, using your body weight (squats, planks, push-ups, Pilates) is beneficial, especially to get you started…

If you don’t know what you are doing or have injured yourself in the past and feel uncomfortable or don’t have the confidence, work with someone who can help you.

I can help you. I am all about getting the basic foundations of your movement nailed to build strength from there. I love teaching beginners or anyone who used to be fit, and for a multitude of reasons, feels like they need to go back to basics. You can join one of my classes or work with me 1:1.

If you are ready to join a gym, or want to get proficient at lifting weights, I have friends who I can recommend depending on your location.
